What's happened? Hi everyone! I've received messages from quite a few friends and users of this site asking what's gone wrong with the site since there have been no updates for ages ... The truth of the matter is that with recent changes in my life (and a particularly heavy schedule in 2003 as I completed my LL.D. thesis) I have had little time to post new stuff on the site. I'll try to rectify this in the months ahead ... Sadly, my digital camera is officially dead and there will be no new photos for now (until I get a new one!). Also, I am rapidly losing my links to the world of hospitality law - so you will be seeing less on this in the site. I plan to revamp this front page completely, but don't intend to put away all the resources I have made available to you to date. I don't know when I'll find the time to make these changes, but they will happen ... I plan to make more use of this "blog" facility, so you should be seeing more frequent posts in the months ahead!

No more hotels, please! Today's editorial in the Times of Malta makes interesting reading. It briefly charts the development of the hotel industry in our capital Valletta, before dealing with the recent government decision rejecting the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association's request to impose a moratorium on the construction of new hotels on the island. The Editorial concludes that the only justifiable reason in halting further development is the impact that it would have on the environment. To read the editorial in full click here.

Discounting room rates does not increase revenues or drive business! Does reducing your room rates during slow or quiet business periods increase your room revenue? A study conducted by the renowned American institution, Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration, reveals that discounting rooms will not necessarily drive revenue up nor in any way lead to increased business. Moreover, hotels are at greater risk than ever before of lower revenues because the Internet has enormously exacerbated the problem of discounting room rates. Restaurant awarded Lm20,000 in damages The Times of Malta reported today that a decision by Justice Tonio Mallia in our Civil Court yesterday ordered the Director of Roads to pay Fiorino d'Oro Restaurant the sum of Lm 20,000 in damages. The plaintiff company had complained that it had sustained damages as a result of delays in carrying out road works in the Salina area. The works had started in April 2001 and are yet to be completed. The Court, whilst acknowledging that the works on the road were necessary in the public interest, found for the restaurant on the basis that the works were being carried out at a very slow pace. Latest lecture notes... I'm posting these notes for David Vella's front office management class, but if you're interested in hospitality then you should find these notes fairly useful.
These are the notes on a Code of Practice agreed to by the International Hotel & Restaurant Association (IH&RA) and the Universal Federation of Travel Agents’ Associations (UFTAA) - Lecture 8: Code of Practice
These are the slides from my lecture on Tuesday 19th November on Data Protection and Statutory Requirements. Lecture 9: Data Protection and Statutory Requirements

Let's visit Vittoriosa ... There hasn't been much going on lately on the web site when it comes to the photo galleries. Some of you have been emailing to ask me when am I next going to post some new images of Malta on this site. Well, the day has finally come! Today I visited Vittoriosa with my good friend Neville, and these images and commentary are my humble effort to bring to you a fraction of the splendour of this historical Maltese city. Enjoy!
A Visit to Vittoriosa
