More of Gozo ...
Index Yes, I am very fond of the island of Gozo! This time I have some photos from Dwejra, and further down a couple of photos from the Basilica at Nadur.

It-Tieqa, Dwejra
There's another photo of the Azure Window on my site, but I find this particular shot particularly breathtaking ...

Fungus Rock
The Fungus Rock, known as Il-Gebla tal-General is also located at Dwejra.  The Knights of the Order of St John had discovered a fungus with medicinal properties on the rock, and established a guard there to prevent looting.  It was claimed that the fungus grew only on the rock - but this claim turned out to be incorrect.

Ir-Ramla l-Hamra
This is probably the most beautiful bay on our Islands.  It's known as the "Red Beach" because of the colour of its sand.  Pirates would often descend on Gozo at night and land on this particular beach.   A wall was constructed on the seabed itself to foil attempts to land ...

Inland Sea
Again at Dwejra, this is a unique spot on Gozo.  The inland sea is the departure point for boat trips to the Azure Window.  The boathouses may have been constructed for use by fishermen, but are now mostly used as summer "residences".  Most have been illegally constructed, and sadly spoil the otherwise beautiful view ...

Basilica of St Peter and St Paul at Nadur
The Basilica at Nadur was designed in two separate parts.  The first part was designed and built during the rule of the Knights by Giuseppe Bonnici in 1760.  The second part - the extension - was designed by the well-known artist FS Sciortino who attempted to recreate the style of Italian Renaissance in the nineteenth century.

Interior of the Basilica
The Interior of the Basilica is lavishly decorated and ornate.  The dome itself is meant to symbolise the search for harmony which is a striking feature of this church's construction.

Model of the Basilica at Nadur
This model of the Basilica was open for viewing during Holy Week, and I managed to take a photo of it.  With hindsight I should have taken some closer shots of the individual statues in the aisles.  This is a really faithful model of the Church.
