The Malta
Tourism Authority organises a number of festivals annually, amongst which
is the festival Valletta: History and Elegance. This year I
decided to follow one of the historical re-enactments and thought I'd share a
few photos with you ... Enjoy! (Next time
I'll try to get a better vantage point to take some better photos) |

This year the festival happened to coincide with the 400th Anniversary of the election of Frenchman Alof De Wignacourt to the post of Grandmaster of the Order of St John. The reenactment in the streets of Valletta,
culminating in Great Siege Square, took place on Sunday 22nd April.

Following the election a
detachment of the military militia would march down Strada San Giorgio, now
renamed Republic Street. |
The Secretary of State has just finished addressing the Grandmaster, on the People's behalf. The latter, in turn, promises to protect and defend the people of the Islands against the Ottoman Empire. The speech is followed by a Gun Salute. The Band and Choir then sings the Te Deum. Click on image to enlarge | ||
